Cineplex to close its west end cinema in the spring

CinePlex Entertainment is shutting down its west-end theatre and the main cinema in southwest Vancouver.

The company, which has operated three venues in the area, announced Thursday that it would close the theatres and theatre buildings by March 19, 2019, for a total of two years.

It said it was also cutting back on events and programming in the downtown area, which includes the new CineBox and the new Vancouver Theatre.

It is the second time the company has shut down its Vancouver theatre.

It closed the Bayshore Theatre in 2013.

Cineplex’s decision comes as a major economic boon to the area.

The company expects the closure to create about 3,100 new jobs.

The Vancouver Economic Development Corp. is reviewing CinePods revenue projections, but has not said when it will make a decision.
